Not fewer than 10 people were reportedly killed in a clash at the Sabo area of Ile-Ife

Not fewer than 10 people were reportedly killed in a clash at the Sabo area of Ile-Ife, when the ancient city  was yesterday engulfed in a bloody clash between the indigenes of the  town and the Hausa community.

Though no tangible reason was given for the crisis but a source said, trouble started when an Hausa man living in Sabo area of the town was allegedly accused of having love affair with the wife of an Ife man who reportedly went over-boards when he discovered what happened.

The incident said to have happened on Tuesday night degenerated into a bloody clash between the two communities yesterday leading to the killing and destruction of property from both sides.

Aregbesola imposes curfew on Ife Meantime, the Osun state government has declared a two day curfew in the entire Ile-Ife City. According to a statement from the Director of Bureau of Communication, Media and Strategy to governor Rauf Aregbesola, Mr Semiu Okanlawon; “The curfew has been compelled by the breach of the peace in the area which led to avoidable destruction of lives and properties. ‘’The curfew, which will be between 6pm to 7am, will be in force till Friday.”

CHAOS: One of the scenes of the crisis in Ile-Ife

The crisis While the crises lasted, dangerous weapons such as daggers, guns, clubs, arrows, cutlasses and swords were freely used in a free for all between the two warring tribes. Eyewitness told Vanguard that, the people organised themselves into two formidable groups to match themselves strength for strength in the frightening battle. At the battle ground around Sabo area of the town, the Hausas were said to have used freely daggers, arrow and bow to confront the Yoruba who were said to be armed with dane guns, cutlasses and other traditional weapons. Also, several shops were reportedly looted by miscreants who took advantage of the violence that engulfed the ancient city to perpetrate the act.

Shop owners around the place briskly locked up their shops while the environment was completely deserted by both commercial and  private vehicles. Residents of the area had relocated to another part of the town to escape the blood bath.

Some of the persons killed in the mayhem were said to have been burnt while bonfire was also made by both sides. A combined team of anti riot, regular and mobile policemen were on ground to maintain peace as they were seen at strategic positions, milling around the scene of the incident.

Speaking on the development, Imam Muhammed Basir, the Senior Special Assistant to Osun state governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola on Arewa matters, said; ‘’The situation has taken a very dangerous dimension because as I am talking to you, one person had been shot dead. ‘’I have notified the state governor and the police commissioner, Mr. Fimihan Adeoye and the State Director of the Department of State Security Services on the development.’’ In his own comment, the acting Commissioner of  Police in the state, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar Koji while speaking through the command Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Folasade Odoro, said that, the security men were in control of the situation. However, soldiers from Engineering Construction Regiment, Ede were drafted to the scene of the crisis to quell further killings and destruction of property.

Govt orders immediate quelling of crisis

Osun state government said it has caused deployment of heavy security forces to the scene of the crisis in Ile Ife in Ife Central West Local Council Development Area of the state. A statement from the Office of the Governor, signed by the Director, Bureau of Communication and Strategy, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, assured of the readiness of the security forces to quell the face-off which has led to the destruction of properties in affected areas of the ancient city. “This is to assure all and sundry that the breach of the peace in Ile Ife is not beyond the control of our highly mobilized security forces. “To this end, the governor of the state of Osun, upon receiving reports of the fracas, the exact cause of which is still under investigation, has ordered deployment of adequate security forces and is getting minute-by-minute situation reports. “The Government therefore warns those involved in this act of criminal breach of public peace to end it immediately as the full weight of the law would be brought to bear on anyone arrested.”

Ooni Ogunwusi appeals to warring parties

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja11, also appealed to the warring Yoruba and Hausa factions to give peace a chance. Speaking through his media aide, Comrade Moses Olafare, the monarch said that, he had instructed some palace officials to see to the rescue of the Hausas who were arrested by the Ifes in the mayhem. The monarch was quoted as telling the people of Ife to ensure that no more live or property is lpeac while the law enforcement agencies are allowed to restore peace to the community.

He told his subjects to ensure that they allow peace to reign in their domain so that his efforts since ascending the throne to ensure peace in his domain, Yorubaland and Nigeria as a whole would not be in vain. He stated that, peace would soon be fully restored between the two warring factions in the town.

He appealed to the two factions to tolerate one another and live as one without segregation, sectionalism, tribalism and nepotism saying all tribes are one in the country. Vanguard gathered that casualties are from both the Hausa and Yoruba communities including children from both sides.

Some of the victims that received varied degrees of injuries are receiving treatment at the Obafemi Awolowo University Hospital Teaching Hospital Complex, Ile-Ife. Meanwhile, normalcy is gradually returning to the ancient town as the security agencies combined to ensure no more damage is done on both sides.

[Must Read] I can't worship deities - Oluwo of Iwoland

The Oluwo of Iwo in Osun State, Oba Dr. Abdulrasheed Adewale Akanbi, has urged traditional rulers to desist from worshiping their heritages but rather turn them to tourism that can generate revenue and also create jobs for the youths.
He added that deities are not meant to be worshiped due to their insignificance in the administration of communities stressing that, “They are just mere symbols and not gods as claimed by some people.
The Oluwo stated this while in an exclusive interview with ROYAL NEWS in his palace on Tuesday. He said: “I will never join them to worship deities. Who are even the deities? Let me tell you, if Oshun, Moremi or Oya among others were to be alive today and they come to my Palace, they will prostrate for me. So why will I be worshiping them?.
“It is time for all traditional rulers to go back to God and lead their subjects in the ways of God. Being an Oba or King does not necessarily mean that people should be fearing you. ”
He however advised monarchs to ensure that their cultures are embedded into religions practice in order to promote unity, peace and development in the society.
Speaking on the state of the nation’s economy, Oba Adewale urged the Federal government to dwell more into industrialization rather than clamouring that everybody should go to farm.
According to him, “I believe that if more industries are attracted into the country, more unemployed youths will be gainfully employed while more funds will be generated by the government. How many people can farming employ? Must all of us become farmers in Nigeria?
“Industrialization will consume less land and generate more jobs than farming that will consume large land and generate few jobs. All what farming can provide in menial jobs.”
He however urged President Muhammadu Buhari to look inward and persuade Nigerians in diaspora to encourage their friends as well as foreign investors to come and establish factories in Nigeria.

The university authorities have also confirmed the incident, but said the family had not officially informed the institution. Uju Umo, the university’s Dean of Student Affairs said: “I travelled for a burial last weekend and yesterday I got a text message saying a student had committed suicide.
“It happened at Odenigwe, one of the host communities outside the school and I was told he left a suicide note apologising to his fellow gamblers.”

MMM popularity continues, scheme’s website ranks top 5 most visited in Nigeria

The online page of a controversial deposit money scheme, MMM, has taken a spot amongst the most visited websites in Nigeria, according to Web traffic monitor, Alexa.com.
Statistics available on Alexa, a standard for online traffic evaluation, show that MMM maintained the 5th position for the most part of November, edging out major platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and online retailer, Jumia.com.
PREMIUM TIMES could not find a spokesperson for MMM to comment for this story, but the spike in its online presence might not be unconnected with its growing popularity amongst Nigerians.
Nigerians continue to patronise the scheme —which promises a return of up to 30 per cent on every investmentwithin 30 days— despite all warnings from the appropriate authorities to desist.
The Central Bank of Nigeria recently rolled out a radio and television blitz warning Nigerians not to risk their incomes on the scheme, all to no avail.
Members of the House of Representatives were criticised by some MMM participants when they called for immediate crackdown on promoters of the scheme earlier this month.
Typical allegations from online commenters were about how the lawmakers were trying to block a critical means of livelihood for the masses.
This week, the group marked its first anniversary in the country by donating gifts to the internally displaced persons in the Federal Capital Territory.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that members of the community as part of their activities marking the exercise tagged: “MMM Cares”, donated relief materials to IDPs at the Gwoza and Bama Camps in Abuja.
They donated bags of rice, garri, cartons of beverages and noodles as well as clothing, and drugs, NAN said.

"Say No To Bribe" - Nigerian Police Holds Solidarity Protest to support Buhari's fight Against corruption.

The Nigerian Police Force, Anambra State Command has called on the public to help and support the fight against corruption.

This is contained  in a video reportedly made available online to online publisher Omojuwa.Com.   The video clearly showed Policemen and women in their uniforms carrying banners and placards with different anti-corruption inscriptions.

This sight is actually a surprising and awkward considering how corrupt the Nigerian Police is perceived to be.

Speaking to pressmen, the Anambra State Police Commissioner, Mr Sam Okaula, in a statement said; “We are now saying no to corruption. Enough is enough. We are tired of this Toga of corruption that has been hanging on our neck for quite sometimes now. Everyone of us is coming out to say no to corruption and to crime. That is what you have seen today. This message will go down the line. The Area Commanders will pass this information across and also the DPOs. We also want to sensitize the public that the Police should not be lured into corruption. The Police is ready to fight corruption to a standstill.”

Speaking further was the PPRO of the State Command, Nkiru Nwode. She was also heard saying; “You go to any Police Station and you’re asked to pay for Bail. Please, my CP operates an open door policy. His open door policy has no limit. Come to the office or call the PPRO number which has been made available to everyone. Please call and report any Police officer that asks you for money for bail. Meanwhile, not all offenses are bailable.”

The activity resulted into a traffic gridlock as the men and women of the Anambra State Police Command took to the streets chanting anti-corruption songs to create public awareness against corruption in the Police force and Nigeria as a whole.

This is a welcomed development in the country and if this kind of activities are backed up with properly structured actions, Nigeria may yet be able to rid it’s Police force of the cancerous corruption plaguing it.

[Must Read] Why I marked one year anniversary on the throne in low key (Oluwo of Iwoland)

Why I mark one year anniversary in low key -Oluwo

The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdul-Rasheed Akanbi yesterday said he refused to celebrate his one year on the throne in a flamboyant way because he has not fulfilled his plans to transform the ancient town and make life better for Iwo indigenes.

Oba Akanbi told our correspondent that he marked his one year on the throne with a special prayer in his palace in Iwo.

The monarch said he was not ready to celebrate until Iwo attained the enviable heights he aspired and the youths of Iwo were gainfully employed.

“I decided to mark this one year on the throne on a very low key because I have not fulfilled my plans in my town. I cannot begin to celebrate when large numbers of our youths are unemployed”.

“I will start celebrating when we succeed in our plans to transform Iwo and the people are happy. I can only celebrate when we take Iwo to greater heights in terms of development and better life.”

Oluwo said the special prayer held at the palace in commemoration of enthronement was organised to thank God for His grace on Iwo and further seek His help in moving Iwo forward.

“I have reason to thank God for His grace on my life and my people. I thank God for the peace and tranquillity in Iwoland. God has been good to us. However, we are not celebrating yet because we have not attained our desired heights”, Oluwo said

Meanwhile, the leader of Oodua People's Congress Otunba Gani Adams visited the Oluwo in his palace to felicitate with him on the one year anniversary.

Obama congratulates Trump, invites him to White House to discuss power transition

President Barack Obama called to congratulate Donald Trump after his surprise victory, and invited him to a meeting at the White House.

A White House spokesperson said on Wednesday morning that the two men had spoken, and that President Obama had asked to president elect to travel to Washington DC on Thursday so they could begin to discuss the transition on power.

It appears that the two men spoke shortly before 4:00 am on Wednesday, Mail Online said.

The White House said in a statement: “Ensuring a smooth transition of power is one of the top priorities the President identified at the beginning of the year and a meeting with the President-elect is the next step.”

That call came after President Obama’s somber election night speech on Wednesday, during which he told Americans: “No matter what happens, the sun will rise in the morning.”

Obama will also deliver a statement, with Vice President Joe Biden, from the White House’s Brady Press Briefing Room at 12.15pm ET.

Trump’s campaign manager Kellyanne Conway also spoke about the call between the two men during an appearance on Today Wednesday morning, saying: ‘Well, it was a very warm conversation.

“We were happy to receive the call from the President and they had a great, thorough conversation about Mr. Trump’s victory, he was congratulated, and I think they resolved to work together, which is exactly what this country needs – to get the current president and the president elect and others who are in leadership position to help unify and heal the country.”

She then added: “We expect that the two gentlemen will be meeting soon.”

White House press secretary Josh Earnest had told reporters traveling aboard Air Force One last week that the president was leaving his schedule open on Wednesday and Thursday for a possible meeting with the president-elect.
