[Must Read] I can't worship deities - Oluwo of Iwoland

The Oluwo of Iwo in Osun State, Oba Dr. Abdulrasheed Adewale Akanbi, has urged traditional rulers to desist from worshiping their heritages but rather turn them to tourism that can generate revenue and also create jobs for the youths.
He added that deities are not meant to be worshiped due to their insignificance in the administration of communities stressing that, “They are just mere symbols and not gods as claimed by some people.
The Oluwo stated this while in an exclusive interview with ROYAL NEWS in his palace on Tuesday. He said: “I will never join them to worship deities. Who are even the deities? Let me tell you, if Oshun, Moremi or Oya among others were to be alive today and they come to my Palace, they will prostrate for me. So why will I be worshiping them?.
“It is time for all traditional rulers to go back to God and lead their subjects in the ways of God. Being an Oba or King does not necessarily mean that people should be fearing you. ”
He however advised monarchs to ensure that their cultures are embedded into religions practice in order to promote unity, peace and development in the society.
Speaking on the state of the nation’s economy, Oba Adewale urged the Federal government to dwell more into industrialization rather than clamouring that everybody should go to farm.
According to him, “I believe that if more industries are attracted into the country, more unemployed youths will be gainfully employed while more funds will be generated by the government. How many people can farming employ? Must all of us become farmers in Nigeria?
“Industrialization will consume less land and generate more jobs than farming that will consume large land and generate few jobs. All what farming can provide in menial jobs.”
He however urged President Muhammadu Buhari to look inward and persuade Nigerians in diaspora to encourage their friends as well as foreign investors to come and establish factories in Nigeria.

How I was duped inside Lagos taxi – Victim

A victim of a three-man syndicate that specialises in swindling unsuspecting members of the public by pretending to have their goods seized by the Nigerian Customs has told the police how she was duped of N9,000.
Chiwenu Ibeh said she was going to Ojodu Berger from Ojota, in Lagos, when a taxi driver, in an ash-coloured Toyota Camry 1997 model with registration number SMK 886 DK, stopped at the bus stop to pick her.
“As he drove along, he picked another passenger on Kudirat Abiola Way,” said Mrs. Ibeh.
“We were still on Kudirat Abiola Way when the new passenger started a conversation in something like French language with the driver.”
Mrs. Ibeh said the driver then pleaded with her that he wants to take the new passenger to Custom’s Office on Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, where his goods were seized.
“It was here that their story changed and I became the subject of their manipulation in connivance with a Customs agent and a pastor,” she said.
“Under the pretext that the four of us assist the man whose goods were trapped with the Customs over export duties, they brainwashed me into releasing my ATM card, led me to withdraw the last N9,000 from my account.
“After this, the pastor prayed for me and told me to go home and get more money my family kept at home.”
Mrs. Ibeh said the incident occurred last week.
“On Thursday, my husband and I were standing at the Maryland Bus Stop,” she continued.
“I saw the same Toyota Camry with same number plate and a new driver, but beside it was the former driver that lured me into fraud, pretending to be passenger.
“I alerted RRS officers stationed in Maryland and they arrested them.”
In a statement on Sunday, the police said they arrested the driver, Kenneth Umukoro, 36, and his accomplice, Uba Utokcha, 41.
The police said they also arrested two other suspects, Joseph Onuoha and Ikechukwu Okeke separately but in similar circumstances on Tuesday and Wednesday last week respectively.
Mr. Onuoha told interrogators that he belonged to a fraud syndicate led by one man simply identified as Toronto (who is now at large), who trained over 40 of them to go out daily in search of would-be victims, the police statement said.
“When we hit jackpot, we share it into five parts. Toronto takes two parts. Two of us in a team share two and we would share the remaining part to others,” the statement quoted Mr. Onuoha, 40, as saying.
“Presently, our office in Ajegunle has been busted by the police. Toronto as I was told has relocated to somewhere in Surulere. Whenever we have issues with the police, he comes around to secure our bail.”
Dolapo Badmus, the Police Public Relations Officer, said the police would not relent in their duties of making the state crime free and warned members of the public to be wary of suspicious dealings.
The police said the four suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti.

[Must Read] Yahoo Boy got married to his online client

An internet romance scam took an unexpected turn, writes Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani.

When Maria Grette first discovered that the “58-year-old Danish man” with whom she had fallen in love was actually a 24-year-old Nigerian “419” internet scammer, the 62-year-old Swede was distraught. But, soon, her feelings changed.

“The most terrible thing was not that he had cheated me, but that he had lost his innocence,” she said.

She became consumed with what she describes as “a profound need to make a difference to the people of Nigeria”.

Ms Grette’s relationship with Johnny (not his real name) began after an evening of fun and games with her girlfriends, during which they playfully created a profile for her on an online dating website. A few years before, she had gone through a traumatic divorce, and her friends teased her about finally starting a new relationship. Maria Grette.

But when the fun of creating her profile was over, Ms Grette, who works as an arts teacher, painter and arts therapist, didn’t give much further thought to the website.

“I received messages telling me that people had contacted me, but I never looked at them,” she said.

Then, one day, she did.

“I still don’t know why,” she said. “It was like a sudden impulse happening before I could stop it.”

That particular message was from a man who described himself as a Dane raised in South Carolina, USA; a civil engineer working on a contract in England; a widower with a son in a Manchester university.

“I was caught up by the atmosphere and by something in his words,” she said.

Johnny:  “I wish I could see through your eyes and see what you like to see”

Maria:  “I like to see the truth, and often the truth is more beautiful and greater than people dare to realize”

Johnny:  “You talk in parable´s. I can´t wait to see you”

Maria:  “I can’t understand how you can think so dedicated of me, when you have never met me. That scares me.”

“We spent some time writing, then he called from a UK number.”

Ms Grette, who had lived in different countries across Europe, was surprised that she could not place the man’s accent. She mentioned this to him but didn’t give it too much thought.

He told her that he was planning for his retirement; had Sweden in mind for a place to settle; owned a house in Denmark inherited from his parents; wanted to leave that to his son, Nick, who was very attached to it, while he looked for a new home for himself in Sweden.

“I wanted to meet him because I liked him,” she said. “He had a way and a sweetness I had never known in a man before. And he was innocent in a way that puzzled me.”

Ms Grette put all these qualities down to “an old fashioned upbringing and an isolated life – living in hotels and spending his free time on golf courses owing to much travelling”.

After three months of communicating, the man agreed to come over and visit her in Sweden. But before that, he and his son needed to make a quick trip to Nigeria for a job interview, he said.

Johnny called to let her know that he was at Heathrow Airport. And to say that he had landed in Nigeria. He also got her to speak with Nick. The next phone call was to tell her that he was in a Lagos hospital.

They had been mugged, his son shot in the head, and they were without money and papers.

Unfortunately, his bank did not have a branch in Africa, he added, so it would take time to transfer money from his UK account. Meanwhile, the hospital management was requesting €1000 to proceed with treatment.

The request

“Honey, I am in the hospital right now using the doctor´s laptop to send you this message so you can know my situation. Honey, if Nick dies I will also die with him, I have been crying, I wish I could call you, I wish I never came here, I will never forgive myself for bringing Nick along with me. I will call you with the doctor´s phone and send you an email later if I have the chanse.

“Honey, I am happy to hear from you and I am still at the hospital. The doctor said we where lucky we where not kidnapped. The bank does not have a location in Africa, so it will take time to get money and the management are requesting 1000 euros to proceed with treatment. Nick is all I have got and I will not forgive myself if anything happens to him. I am confused, and I do not know where to turn at the moment……”

“I will never forget how I rushed to the Western Union office, trembling while I did the transfer,” Ms Grette said.

“All I could think of was to get the two persons in Nigeria out of danger.” The plot developed after that initial transfer. Medical complications called for more money. The doctors demanded more advance fees.

Several thousands of euro later, in what she describes as “coming to her senses”, Maria realised that something was amiss.

She stopped responding to his messages.

Three weeks after her silence, he called her and confessed. He told her that he was not who she thought he was.

“I said I already knew that. I asked him to tell me his true identity and he did.” He was a 24-year-old Nigerian “419” scammer. He had finished university two years earlier but had no job. These kind of advance fee frauds are known as 419 scams in Nigeria after the section of the Criminal Code which covers fraud.

He further described himself as a “devil” who had wronged “a lovely woman”. “He said he had never met anyone like me before, that he had been fighting his feelings for me for a long time.

He said his scamming mates had warned him about falling in love with a ‘client’, that he had ignored them because he trusted me and did not want to lose contact with me.”

The revelation

From this point on, their communication took a new turn. There were no further requests for cash. “The attraction I started feeling was to the person who was revealing himself to me… It was still him, but with a new name and different age and circumstances,” she said.

Johnny sent her a photograph of himself, but Maria was not satisfied with that. “I wanted to meet him,” she said. “I could not live with this relationship unless it was adjusted to reality in all senses.”

Unable to get him a visa to travel to Sweden, she made up her mind to go to Nigeria.

In October 2009, Ms Grette travelled to Africa for the first time in her life.

“When I saw him at the airport in Abuja, tears fell over his face, and I knew I had known him all my life.”

Ms Grette described her two weeks in Nigeria as blissful, a period during which she and Johnny succeeded in transforming their romantic feelings for each other into a good friendship.

She met his friends, many of whom were also scammers. It was while enjoying their company one night in a local bar that she began to wonder how she could make a difference.

“I asked myself what I could do to prevent a situation where healthy, good young men fall into this trap,” she said.

An idea came to her two years later, in 2011, after she saw an article on a Nigerian news website about an arts exhibition. Over the past six years, Ms Grette has arranged for a number of African artists to visit Europe for arts exhibitions, workshops, conferences and competitions.

She has assisted them to source international grants and other funding to advance their work.

She has also visited Uganda to give talks on art, and is looking forward to another visit to Nigeria scheduled for later this year.

Ms Grette, now 69 and living in Norway, is elated at the opportunity to improve the lives of these young artists. “Johnny has given me more than he took,” she said, “Without him, I would not have met Africa.”

When she’d visited him in Abuja, Johnny promised Ms Grette that he would give up scamming.

With her assistance, he left Nigeria shortly afterwards, to study in America. Although they have not met each other again since, she continued to provide him with financial assistance until he completed his degree a few years ago and got a job in the American oil sector.

They still communicate frequently, updating themselves on each other’s lives; and last year, he bought one of her paintings which she shipped over to him in America.

“He is very dear to me,” she said.

“He has asked me so many times to forgive him and I told him that the most important thing is to forgive himself.” “Source: BBC

[Must Read] The Traditional Ruler begins Rehabilitation of Roads

Oluwo Of Iwo Begins Rehabilitation Of Roads

If there is anything common in the traditional race of the yorubas, it is the way their kings enjoy their lives with exotic cars, mansion and gathering of wives, then leave the primary duties that would benefit the people they are leading for the government to execute.

The case of Oba Abdul, Rasheed Adewale Akanbi (The Oluwo Of Iwo) is different, in his quest to make life more better for the people of his territory, the famous king has commenced the rehabilitating the bad state of the Iwo-Osogbo- Ibadan expressway which has since been abandoned by motorists for years due to its poor condition.

Oluwo made it known the patching of road which was started and supervised by him is part of his agenda to assist his empire in making life easier and better for the people therein. He said:
“When I came out to patch the Iwo/Osogbo road that linked my town to the state capital, my action seemed strange to many people who saw me on the road during the exercise because they felt it was a taboo for the Oba to be patching the road but I do not see it that way because I’m serving my people. I was determined to make that road motorable in the best interest of economy of my town because we cannot afford to be cut off from the state capital. That road is central to the economic development of Iwo”.

The king however showed appreciation to members of the National Union Of Road Transport Worker (NURTW), and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) for coming out en masse in making the dream a reality. They had choices, they could pass through other roads, but they realized the fact that the bad condition of the road is giving Iwo community adverse economic development.

Oba Akanbi urges fellow traditional rulers not to limit themselves in to high standard of living alone, and ignore the beliefs that limits them approachable as this will help them in rendering more social activities in their respective domains. He further reveals that era of kings living like God is over, he said what should be the priority to any king is endless service to his people.

Sad News: Zenith Bank Sacks Over 1,200 Employees in Nigeria

Employees of Zenith Bank PLC, one of Nigeria’s leading new generation banks, were hit with a sad news today as over 1,200 were sacked on Wednesday, Premium Times reports.
Although a source said about 240 people were sacked, including eight General Managers and 40 Assistant General Managers, it is likely that more than that number of people were dismissed.
According to Stella Dimoko Korkus a source is quoted as saying: “This past weekend, Zenith bank sacked more than 2,000 staff. There was no warning, no rumors, nothing!

“As a matter of fact, two Executive Directors were promoted to Deputy Managing Director by Jim Ovia himself last week and some other top management were also promoted.

“Most of the staff believed there was an imminent mass staff promotion looming soonest and went home for the weekend with joy and hope.

“So you can imagine the shock when a lot of people were notified on Saturday up till today that their services are no longer required. And more sack to continue even this week.

“In this harsh economy and with Christmas a month away, what a cruel inhumane thing to do. Most of these people have worked for more than 10years, staying loyal to the brand. Some have made sacrifices for this bank but were laid off so wickedly.

“Where is the Minister of labour in this country? Did they not notify banks to cease laying off their staff? Oh I weep for my country Nigeria! I weep for the sacked staff and their families! I weep, Oh I weep!”
Another source added: “A formal meeting was held with the affected staff since Monday this week, where details of their disengagement benefits were discussed and agreement reached.”
Recently, Access Bank, which acquired former Intercontinental Bank, sacked 1,600 of its workers across the nation, while Mainstreet Bank, one of the three nationalised banks is reported to have equally sent more than 400 of its workers away for a similar reason.
